Purpose

The overall purpose and mission of the Junior Board Member (JBM) program is to provide an increased representation of student members to the South Carolina Society of Health-System Pharmacist (SCSHP) Board of Directors.

Key responsibilities include communication between student members and Board, feedback to Board, input in all Board issues, and development of society membership, based on member needs, desires and requests. The program provides opportunities to strengthen leadership and communication skills, network with Board of Director (BOD) and pharmacists throughout the state and identify ways to have influence within the profession. Other responsibilities may be assigned based on the annual plan of SCSHP and the President’s vision for the upcoming year.

JBM are eligible based on the following criteria:•    Good academic standing within Class of 2026 and 2027,
•    Current member of local SSHP chapter,
•    Current member of SCSHP, and
•    Confirmation of receipt for one (1) letter of recommendation from a pharmacist or faculty member.

Goals

  1. Integrate student leaders into the planning and execution of SCSHP events, meetings, and membership recruitment by having a presence on the SCSHP BOD.

  2. Mentor JBM in various areas of leadership within the SCSHP BOD to further develop leadership skills.

  3. Provide insight and innovation to enhance learning opportunities for students via meeting programming, provide initiative for membership retention after graduation, and encourage leadership at the state and national level, including political advocacy.

  4. Attend and actively participate in live Board meetings (twice during term) and participate in conference calls (once monthly).

Objectives for JBM

  • 1.     Develop leadership skills as an early career professional.
  • 2.     Explore different career paths in health-systems pharmacy – including hospital administration, inpatient and inpatient/outpatient clinical practice.
  • 3.     Participate actively in committee charges and activities within SCSHP based on interests and available opportunities.
  • 4.     Explore committee opportunities within the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
  • 5.     Participate in the state legislative process and affairs.
  • 6.     Promote student, pharmacist, and technician membership and engagement.
  • 7.     Participate in member recognition and appreciation.

Timeline

The timeline of diverse topics and activities for the JBM program varies per year, based on the cohort’s goals and interests. Highlighted topics and activities from the 2022-2023 and 2023- 2024 JBM programs include: project development to SCSHP members; leadership book club; postgraduate discussion; strategic planning; and life-work integration.

Mentors

Members of SCSHP can be recruited to be JBM mentors and dedicate to monthly discussions with assigned JBM during a portion of the year. Discussions can be in-person or on Zoom but are encouraged to be face-to-face instead via telephone or email. Past presidents and executive board members are targeted for mentorship, but other members are targeted based on the area of practice from the JBM’s interest.
